A Revenant, according to tradition, is a visible ghost or animated corpse that was believed to return from the grave to terrorize the living. The word "revenant" is derived from the Latin word, revenans, "returning", from the verb "revenire"; in French, "revenant" means "coming back", from the verb "revenir", meaning "to come back".
Belief in revenants lies among the universal rituals for clebrating the dead and to keep them in their place. Later legends and folklore depict revenants as returning for a specific purpose (like exacting revenge on the deceased's killer). Those who belong to this category have awakened at the time of their death, and believe they are actually dead and came back to life. For this reason they tend to be highly motivated individuals who fanatically follow their own goal, even if that objective can change over time. Some are obsessed with revenge, while others pursue the living for pure evil.
Revenants, to the second sight, look like human beings showing the signs of their own demise. Some are almost intact, just a bit 'pale and with strange scars, while others are horribly decaying or showing open wounds, bleeding constantly. The dressing style may vary a lot, some merely wear black leather clothes and paint their face and hands with white enamel, while others can wear lurid red and green striped sweater with a leather glove fitted with blades.
